Under a new regulation taking effect in the UAE from January 1, 2027, every resident will be allowed to register up to two vehicles in their name at no extra cost. A third, fourth or fifth vehicle will require an additional fee for each extra registration, though the exact amount has not been specified in the published rule. The overall cap for any individual resident has been set at five licensed vehicles.
The rule stems from Article 89 of the executive regulation of Federal Decree-Law No. 14 of 2024 on traffic regulation, formalised through Cabinet Decision No. 174 of 2026. Under the same regulation, right-hand-drive vehicles can no longer be licensed for road use in the UAE and may only be kept for display purposes. Any vehicle submitted for registration must also fully meet the country's traffic-safety requirements.
One point left unaddressed in the published text is the status of residents who already own more than five registered vehicles — no transitional period or specific guidance has been given for this group. Traffic experts expect further implementation details, including the precise fee for additional vehicles, to be announced by the relevant authorities before the rule comes into force at the start of 2027.
